SPRING 2025 CAPITAL GRANT: Rolling Out Ramps to Independence

Reach: Homeowners across Accomack and Northampton counties who need critical home repairs, especially older adults and residents with mobility challenges, served by ESVA Housing Mission's volunteer construction teams

Project: ESVCF funding provided the capital for ESVA Housing Mission to purchase two fully equipped construction trailers, stocked with the tools needed to run ramp and home-repair builds. Having a trailer based in each county lets volunteer teams work on projects simultaneously, without losing time and money hauling tools and equipment back and forth.

Impact: Both trailers have now been purchased, the first is fully outfitted, and the second is close behind. With this equipment in place, ESVA Housing Mission completed 36 ramp and critical home-repair projects as of July 2026, powered by twelve volunteer teams who logged 3,318 hours of hands-on labor. Fourteen more projects are already in the queue, putting the organization on pace for about 35 completed builds in 2026 alone — a 50% increase over 2025, its first full year.

Why It Matters: For many of the families ESVA Housing Mission serves, a missing ramp or unsafe step isn't just an inconvenience, it can mean being unable to leave home without calling EMS. By putting fully stocked trailers in both counties, this grant lets volunteer crews spend their limited time building instead of shuttling equipment between job sites. The result shows up in tangible numbers, and in something harder to measure: the tears of joy a client feels the first time they wheel down a new ramp on their own.
