Board of Directors and Staff
The Eastern Shore of Virginia
Community Foundation is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors. These
members are chosen for their leadership, experience and knowledge of the
community and its charitable needs. Current members include:
E. Polk Kellam, Jr., Chairman
Mr. Kellam is president of Kellam Energy, Inc. in Belle Haven. He is a
member of the board of Patient First Corporation in Richmond, a past
trustee of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and a former member of the
Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. An Eastern Shore native, he has
worked closely with Ducks Unlimited and other conservation groups. He is
chairman of the ESVCF Gift Acceptance and Prospect Review Committees and a
member of the Marketing Committee.
Henry P. Custis, Jr., Vice-Chairman
Mr. Custis, a native of Onancock, is a partner in the Accomac law firm of
Custis, Lewis & Dix, L.L.P. He also has been active in real estate
development projects on the Eastern Shore. He is currently Chairman of the
Board of Shore Bank. Mr. Custis was active in the establishment of the
Eastern Shore Family YMCA and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of
Hampton-Sydney College. He is a member of the ESVCF Prospect Review and Gift
Acceptance Committees.
A. Thomas Young, Vice-Chairman
Mr. Young, a native Wachapreague, is the former Director of NASA’s Goddard
Space Flight Center and President and Chief Operating Officer of Martin
Marietta. Mr. Young retired from Lockheed Martin in 1995. He is currently a
Director of the Goodrich Corporation and Science Applications International
Corporation. Mr. Young is involved in various advisory and review activities
associated with the U. S. Space Program. He serves on the ESVCF Gift
Acceptance and Prospect Review Committees.
Gary S. Ginsberg, Secretary/Treasurer
Mr. Ginsberg is a partner in the accounting firm of Ginsberg, Nottingham &
Mapp in Accomac. He moved to the Eastern Shore in 1972. He served on the
Shore Health Services board for 11 years and as its chairman for two years.
Mr. Ginsberg is a past member of the Eastern Shore College Foundation Board
and served for 12 years on the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation
Board. He was treasurer of the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club for four
years and a member of the Broadwater Academy Board for a number of years.

Catherine G. Johnson
Mrs. Johnson, a native of New York, moved to the Eastern Shore in 1977, and
now lives near Pungoteague. She is a retired real estate broker, an
instructor at the Eastern Shore Community College, and a very active member
of the Exmore Rotary Club. Mrs. Johnson chairs the ESVCF Grant Review
Committee and serves on the Prospect Review Committee.

Crosby H. Johnson
Mr. Johnson, an Eastern Shore native, retired in June 2003 from Federal
Service as Executive Director for Capital Investment for the Defense
Commissary Agency, where he oversaw key agency programs including
infrastructure and technology. In addition, he served as the agency’s senior
procurement executive responsible for the agency’s acquisition program. Mr.
Johnson’s lengthy association with the military commissary system includes
procurement positions with the Troop Support Agency, the former commissary
agency for the United States Army.
George N. McMath
Mr. McMath, a native of Onley, for 32 years was owner of Atlantic
Publications, which published community and resort newspapers. He served in
the Virginia General Assembly and is a former Board Chairman of Farmers and
Merchants Bank–Eastern Shore. Mr. McMath is also a former Lay Leader of the
Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, a past member of the
Board of Governors of Wesley Theological Seminary, and a former member of
the Board of Trustees at Virginia Wesleyan College. He chairs the ESVCF
Marketing Committee and is a member of the Prospect Review Committee.
Suzanne Tankard
Mrs. Tankard is office manager for David's Nursery LLP, a twenty-nine year
old family partnership operated by her husband, David, and their two sons,
Dave and Van. She is currently a member of the BB&T Eastern Shore Advisory
Board. She is a former board member of the Eastern Shore Public Library and
The Hermitage. A native of Onancock, she now resides near Exmore. Mrs.
Tankard is a member of the Marketing and Grant Review Committees.

Donald J. Trufant
Mr. Trufant, a native of New York, has owned property on the Eastern Shore
since 1991. He retired in 1996 from Mercantile Safe Deposit and Trust
Company, where he served as Executive Vice President. Mr. Trufant now makes
his home in Cape Charles and Baltimore, Maryland. He serves on the
foundation’s Grant Review Committee.
David M. Parker, Executive Director
Mr. Parker, a native of Onley, spent 25 years in the newspaper business.
Following seven years as executive director of the Eastern Shore of Virginia
Chamber of Commerce and Eastern Shore Tourism Commission, he owned and
operated hospitality properties on the Eastern Shore. Mr. Parker has devoted
much of his life to civic projects throughout the community, serving on
various boards. He chaired the fundraising drive for the Shore Cancer
Center, is currently a member of the board at Shore LifeCare, and is former
chairman of the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation Board. He has
been a member of the Onancock Rotary Club for over 30 years.
